Петербург — возможно, единственный в мире город, который был задуман и построен как собрание всего лучшего из истории других городов и культур, город-ретроспекция. Петергоф выглядит как Версаль, придвинутый к морю, а море и квадратно-гнездовая уличная сетка привезены из Амстердама. В Казанском соборе трудно не увидеть ватиканского Святого Петра, доходные дома стоят что венецианские палаццо, а в Эрмитаже соседствуют копии Лоджий Рафаэля и сам подлинный Рафаэль. Это город копий, стилизаций, подделок. Однако петербургское окно в Европу было также окном в современность: через перебирание чужого прошлого новая столица и ее страна обретали собственное настоящее и приближали будущее…

St. Petersburg is perhaps the only city in the world conceived and built as a collection of the best from the histories of other cities and cultures, a city of retrospect. Peterhof looks like Versailles pushed up to the sea, and the sea and the square-nested street grid were imported from Amsterdam. In Kazan Cathedral, it’s hard not to see the Vatican’s St. Peter’s, the apartment buildings stand like Venetian palazzos, and in the Hermitage, copies of Raphael’s Loggias stand side by side with the real Raphael himself. It is a city of copies, pastiches, and counterfeits. However, St. Petersburg’s window onto Europe was also a window onto the present: by sifting through foreign pasts, the new capital and its country found their own present and hastened the future…
